On April 23, Taipei Marriott Hotel announced that it will become the first hotel in Taiwan to exclusively source cage-free eggs and milk awarded EAST Certified certification.

The five-star international hotel is home to six restaurants, multiple function and banquet venues, and an employee restaurant, which together source more than 600,000 eggs and 50,000 liters of milk per year. The change includes both whole and liquid eggs and will be complete by the end of this month.

Taipei Marriott Hotel commenced the transition following a meeting with EAST in September last year. Since then, EAST has worked with Taipei Marriott Hotel to provide guidance, identify suppliers and advise on certification.

Yu-Min Chen, Deputy Chief Executive of EAST, commended Taipei Marriott Hotel for paving the way for animal welfare in Taiwan’s hospitality sector.

“Animal welfare is both a moral imperative and an important component of food safety,” she said. “Taipei Marriott Hotel’s decision will change the lives of laying hens and dairy cows for the better and inspire other hotels to follow in its footsteps.”

Taipei Marriott Hotel’s transition reflects Marriott International’s global commitment to source 100% of eggs from cage-free sources by 2025. The commitment is part of Marriott International’s sustainability and social impact platform, Serve 360. Taipei Marriott Hotel seeks to lead by example by fulfilling the commitment early and extending its sights to animal welfare certified milk.

“As an international hotel, Taipei Marriott Hotel is deeply conscious of its responsibility to provide guests with a world-class, safe dining experience” expressed Mark Liu, Managing Director of Taipei Marriott Hotel.

The transition to animal welfare certified ingredients – despite increased sourcing costs of more than 30% – demonstrates Taipei Marriott Hotel’s dedication to animal welfare, sustainability and providing an unparalleled guest experience.

“Taipei Marriott Hotel hopes to set a new industry standard, inspiring more companies to practice ethical sourcing and fulfil their responsibilities to the environment and society,” added Liu.

To mark its achievement, Taipei Marriott Hotel has unveiled a collection of Mother’s Day cakes made using cage-free eggs.
