Carrefour Taiwan is the first retailer in Asia to earn a Good Egg Award.

Carrefour Taiwan has become the first retailer in Asia to earn a Good Egg Award from international farm animal welfare charity Compassion in World Farming.

Carrefour received the distinction after it strengthened its landmark cage-free policy last year, committing to sell exclusively cage-free eggs in all stores by 2025. The retailer also pledged to source exclusively cage-free ingredients in all private label products by 2028 – believed to be the first pledge of its kind in Asia.

“This award is proof of how companies, NGOs and SMEs can partner successfully to make change happen, especially in Asia where animal welfare is a big challenge,” said Marilyn Su, CSR & Communications Director at Carrefour Taiwan.

Ms Su also highlighted the links between animal welfare, food safety and environmental sustainability which are at the heart of Carrefour’s Food Transition strategy.

“As a leading supermarket retailer in Taiwan, Carrefour’s commitment shows how awareness about the importance of cage-free production has been growing and gaining momentum across Asia” said Rubia Soares, Compassion’s Food Business Manager in Asia.

Chen Chi-chung, Minister of the Council of Agriculture, commended Carrefour for its support for farmers and exclaimed the Good Egg Award was a symbol of progress for Taiwan’s agriculture sector.

At the press conference, Ms Su expressed her gratitude to the Environment & Animal Society of Taiwan (EAST) for aiding Carrefour’s efforts and announced ambitious new commitments to enhance animal welfare standards in its supply chain. The new targets include conducting animal welfare audits of all slaughterhouses supplying chicken and pork for private label products by 2022 and stocking exclusively EAST Certified milk in Carrefour's single-source milk zones by 2025. The new announcements were marked by the unveiling of a renewed strategic partnership agreement between Carrefour and EAST.

“We congratulate Carrefour Taiwan on receiving the Good Egg Award and look forward to working together to further improve the lives of farmed animals in Taiwan,” said Yu-Min Chen, deputy chief executive of EAST.
