I started volunteering for EAST after graduating from high school. After all, I was liberated from the exams. I was free. But the animals still weren’t. I remember the feeling of finding out how animals are treated on farms. The horror, the disbelief, the helplessness. All I knew was that I wanted to help animals in whatever way I could. That’s how I found EAST. I am glad to be able to do translation and other volunteer work for EAST. If I can’t break into a farm to save a chicken, at least I can play the small role of a cog in the ever expanding project of making the world a better place for animals. I’m grateful to be given the chance to play even a small part in such massive cause!

Volunteering at EAST was a meaningful experience to better understand animal welfare and gain a valuable insight to how civil society groups in Taiwan are calling for change. Volunteering on the field - by joining a cage-free eggs action and investigating a chicken factory as a photographer - offered a rich learning environment. One which, I was able to feel part of a community of likeminded animal rights advocates and made me feel a greater sense of purpose.
